Shino's Mana Area
Akira: In the previous sage’s manual, he wrote that every wizard has a favorite power spot.
It’s a place where they can focus their thoughts and refresh.
I heard that it’s called a mana area. Shino, do you have something like that?
Shino: Right. That’s what Faust was saying in our lesson.
My mana area is my old home. It’s Sherwood Forest at night.
Akira: The forest at night.... Your mana area is a pretty familiar place to you, right, Shino?
Shino: I’m told that’s the case for most people. A person’s “native landscape...” I guess it's a vivid scene from childhood? Places like that tend to become their mana areas.
The forest feels calm at night, but it’s teeming with signs of life. To protect the natural order, I acted as the forest’s guardian.
While carefully concentrating on each and every presence, I felt my energy gather at my fingertips.
Akira: I can really picture that being a powerful magical experience!
Shino: Yeah. After I was told about that, I realized my condition improves at night.
Faust knows his stuff. He knows about the things wizards should know.
He’s the total opposite of my former master. I’m glad Faust became my teacher.
Shino's Amulet
Akira: According to the last sage’s manual, wizards carry an amulet for when they’re away from their mana area for a long time.
Having an amulet gives you the same effect as being in your mana area.
Shino, do you have an amulet, too?
Shino: Right, amulets. Faust taught me about those recently.
Mine’s right here.
Shino showed me a slender flower vase that rested on the shelf.
But instead of flowers, there was an arrangement of leafy branches inside.
Shino: My mana area is Sherwood Forest. That’s why I was told to put plants in my room.
I’m more used to trees than flowers, so I took these branches.
Akira: I see.... So do they work?
Shino: Dunno. There’s a forest near the Magic Manor, and I feel like my magic comes more freely when I go there.
But since placing the amulet, I might've started feeling more calm here in my room.
It was tough to fall asleep when I came to the Magic Manor, but not anymore.
Akira: (Shino couldn’t sleep.... Magic seems to be very sensitive to its environment.)
Shino's Family
Akira: Shino, you mentioned being an orphan. Didn’t you ever look for your family?
Shino: What’s there to look for? Those people threw me away.
Even if I went back to them, do you think they’d welcome me?
Option: S- sorry....
Shino: I’m not mad. I just don’t remember them at all, so there’s nothing to regret.
Option: Your parents could be looking for you, too.
Shino: That’s a pretty optimistic idea. You grew up in a peaceful place, huh, Sage.
Shino: I heard that Oz found Arthur in the place where he was abandoned. I wish he'd found me, too.
If he did, I’d be way stronger by now. If I were that strong when I got to Blanchette Castle, maybe I could’ve been Heath’s teacher.
Akira: But Shino, if you were taken in by Oz, you wouldn’t have ever met the Blanchette family, would you?
Shino: ... You think? Never meeting Master or Mistress or Heath—I’d hate to go through life like that.
This is tough.
Shino's Magical Specialty
Shino: “Matztzah Sudipas!”
Akira: Looks good, Shino. How’s the magic practice going?
Shino: The practice I want to do is going well.
Now for the practice I don’t want to do.
Akira: Practice you don’t want to do.... With magic, are there things you’re good and bad at?
Shino: I just don’t want to do it. It’s not that I’m bad at it.
Faust praised me, saying my base magic is strong and my power output’s huge.
I’m also good at making and applying new magic. Working as the forest guardian meant I had to get creative.
Akira: Sure. Even just by looking, it’s obvious you have strong magic powers.
Shino: Heh. ... But also, he said I lack patience, accuracy, and sensitivity.
It takes detail work to practice those things. Like carefully crafting sugar, or making detailed things using magic.
You can take aim at your prey with precision, but it’s faster just to throw something huge and hit it that way.
Akira: That sounds like something you'd do, but I think both skills are important. Practice hard, and do your best!
Shino: If you say so... starting tomorrow.
Shino's Crest
Akira: I’ve heard that each of the Sage’s Wizards has a crest somewhere on their body.
Shino, where is your crest?
Shino: It’s on my shoulder. Want to see?
Before he finished speaking, Shino had opened up his collar to expose his right shoulder. A black crest, almost like a bruise, was clearly visible.
Shino: It suddenly started glowing and turned hot. The forest had been strange since the Calamity appeared, so at first I was shocked and thought it was something dangerous.
But I’d seen Heath’s crest before, so I knew right away that it was the mark of a Sage’s Wizard, and I was happy.
Akira: Being chosen by the moon made you happy?
Shino: Heath wouldn’t have to go alone anymore to fight the Great Calamity.
I thought from the start that it was better for me to go anyway, since I’m stronger.
Akira: ... You care a lot about your friend, don’t you Shino?
Shino: It’s a servant’s duty to protect his lord. Besides, we have a promise.
The crest appeared, and I was so excited to talk to Heath. I figured he would be happy too, but....
He wasn’t very happy at all. It pissed me off.
I Wanna Eat Pie
Shino: Sage.
Akira: Shino, what’s going on?
Shino: I’m hungry. I wanna eat pie. Can you make it?
Akira: Pie?! Uhm....
Shino: ... You can’t make it?
Akira: (Woah, he looks so dejected...!)
... I’ve never made one before, but I'll give it a try! I’m sure I can manage it.
Shino: Yay.
Akira: If you don’t mind, why don’t we make it together? We can include all the things you like.
Shino: I specialize in eating, but I like that plan of adding what I like. Lemons, and raspberries, and then...
Akira: Oh, but Shino. We haven’t had dinner, so make sure you don’t eat too much.
Shino: I’m still growing, so it’s fine. Pie, dinner, I’ll eat everything.
Akira: Ahaha, well in that case. Let’s head to the kitchen!
